Rental freeze for public markets extended

The Government has decided to extend the rental freeze for all public markets managed by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department for two years to the end of June 2008, the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, announced today (March 24).

The rentals of the markets were reduced by 30% in 1998 and have been frozen at that level since then. The last rental freeze was announced by the Government in July 2005, for an extension until the end of June this year. The subject was recently examined again and the Government decided to continue the freeze.
