UN to hear HKSAR's report under CEDAW in New York
A 10-member Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) team will attend a
United Nations (UN) hearing under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in New York on Thursday (August 10) as
part of the China delegation.
The team, led by the Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food (Health
and Welfare), Ms Sandra Lee, will explain to the UN CEDAW Committee the contents
of the HKSARG's second report under the Convention and answer the Committee's
questions on the implementation of the Convention in Hong Kong.
The HKSAR's second report under the CEDAW was submitted as part of China's
combined fifth and sixth report in early 2004. It details the progress made
since February 1999, when the Committee last examined the HKSARG's initial
report under the Convention. The hearing schedule of periodic reports submitted
by the signatories is determined by the UN CEDAW Committee. Probably due to the
large number of periodic reports required to be considered, the Committee has
not scheduled a hearing on China's report (including the HKSAR's second report)
until now.
The Government's second report under the CEDAW and its response to a list of
questions put forward by the CEDAW Committee over the second report in February
2006 are available on the websites of the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau at
http://www.hwfb.gov.hk and the Women's
Commission at http://www.women.gov.hk.
In addition to Health, Welfare and Food Bureau officials, the team also
comprises the Chairperson of the Women's Commission, Ms Sophia Kao, and
representatives of the Department of Justice, the Economic Development and
Labour Bureau, the Home Affairs Bureau and the Education and Manpower Bureau.
