Government commits to uphold food safety

The Government has called on the public and the food trade to work together to enhance food safety standards in Hong Kong.

Officiating at the opening ceremony of the Food Safety Day 2006 Roadshow today (August 26), the Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food (Food and Environmental Hygiene), Mrs Carrie Yau, said ensuring food safety was one of the major tasks of the Government.

She said that the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) was set up under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) to enhance the control and regulation of food safety, and facilitate the delivery of information and services to the public.

Emphasising the importance of co-operation and communication among the Government, food trade and general public, Mrs Yau said the Centre would hold regular food trade consultation forum and consumer liaison group meetings.

She added that the Expert Committee on Food Safety would also be established to strengthen the consultative framework on food safety issues.

She said today's roadshow was part of the publicity drive to promote food safety awareness among the food trade and the public, with the main message on prevention of cross-contamination.

Mrs Yau said contacts between raw and cooked foods, directly or indirectly, could be a contributing factor for food poisoning.

Also officiating at the roadshow included Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Eddy Chan; Controller, Centre for Food Safety, Dr Mak Sin-ping; Chairman of Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Fred Li Wah-ming; Deputy Chairman, Mr Wong Yung-kan; and member, Mr Tommy Cheung Yu-yan.

The roadshow was organised by the CFS. It featured a variety show, an exhibition and computer games.
