SHWF visits New Zealand Maori Fishing Trust (with photos)
The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, is continuing his
visit in New Zealand, calling on the Maori Fishing Trust today (September 15) to
learn of the country's experience in the management of the fisheries industry.
Dr Chow was briefed on a quota system, introduced by the New Zealand authority
to serve the objective of conserving the nature aquatic resources, as well as
the system of management of the distribution of resources among individual
interest, and the system of monitoring and supervision of the catch and sale of
the fish.
Dr Chow hoped that useful reference could be made of the New Zealand's
experience to help sustain Hong Kong's fisheries trade. The prospect of Hong
Kong trade joining with the New Zealand industry was discussed.
Dr Chow took the opportunity of his stay in Wellington to visit the Chinese
Ambassador, His Excellency, Zhang Yuanyuan. Dr Chow updated Ambassador Zhang of
the latest developments in Hong Kong and discussed with him efforts to tie in
with the Central Government's strategies in lobbying support for Dr Margaret
Chan's candidacy for the post of Director-General of the World Health
Organisation (WHO).
On Monday (September 18), Dr Chow will attend the 57th session of the WHO
Regional Committee for the Western Pacific to be held in Auckland.
