Mental Health Month 2006 launched

< Back

The Mental Health Month 2006 was launched today (September 23) with the staging of a roadshow at Olympian City One.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the Mental Health Month 2006, the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, said as we progressed into a knowledge-based economy, we had to face up to different challenges and stress due to rapid social changes, regardless of sex, age and place of work. Through various activities of the campaign, members of the public could learn more about the importance of mental health and ways to cope with stress positively, and understand stress symptoms and warnings of mood disorders for early prevention.

Sharing a similar view, the chairman of the Subcommittee on Public Education of the Rehabilitation Advisory Committee, Mr Raymond Lee, said the prime objective of today's event was to let members of the public understand that when facing stress problems, they should seek help from family members, friends or professionals before problems worsen beyond remedy.

In addition to stage performances, non-governmental organisations set up booths to provide visitors with information and guidance on the importance of mental health.

Highlights of today's roadshow, together with some case interviews with celebrities who shared their experience in coping with different forms of stress, will be televised on Jade channel of the Television Broadcasts Limited on October 5 at 11pm.

Details of the Mental Health Month activities can be viewed by visiting the homepage of the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau at www.hwfb.gov.hk/en/index.html.
