More live chickens from Mainland during Mid-Autumn Festival

The daily quantity of live chicken imports from the Mainland would be temporarily increased to meet the surge in public demand for live chickens in the five days preceding the Mid-Autumn Festival, a spokesman for the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau said today (September 26).

The spokesman said the daily imports of live chickens from the Mainland would be increased from the current level of 20,000 to 70,000 on October 1 and 2 while in the three days preceding the festival (October 3 to 5), the daily imports would be increased from 20,000 to 50,000.

"The arrangement is made after securing commitment from the trade that public health conditions will be strictly observed and that there will be no overstocking of live chickens in the retail outlets during the five-day period," the spokesman said.

The number of chickens to be imported on October 6 will resume to the daily limit of 20,000.

As before, the Government would closely monitor the situation at the market during this period, the spokesman said.
