Appointments to the Women’s Commission announced

The Chief Executive has appointed the Honourable Mrs Sophie Leung Lau Yau-fun as the first Chairperson of the newly established Women’s Commission for a term of three years.

Mrs Leung has a long record of distinguished public service, and has been actively involved in various community services. She has served as the representative of the textiles and garment functional constituency in the Legislative Council since 1996. She is currently the Honorary Vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Women, Director of the Federation of Hong Kong Garment Manufacturers, Director of the Textile Council of Hong Kong, and a member of the Hospital Authority.

"I am very appreciative and pleased that Mrs Leung has agreed to be the Chairperson of the Commission," said the Secretary for Health and Welfare, Dr E K Yeoh, when welcoming the appointment of Mrs Leung. "Mrs Leung is a highly qualified and dedicated individual and will bring considerable expertise and experience to the position of Chairperson. Her vast experience in private sector life and in community service will be a tremendous asset to the work of the Commission."

Dr Yeoh expressed confidence that the Women’s Commission, under Mrs Leung’s leadership and guidance, would develop a long term vision and achieve considerable success in advancing women's interests, adding that the Government was committed to promoting the advancement of women in Hong Kong and to address their needs and concerns in a comprehensive manner.

"We look forward to working closely with the Women's Commission and local women's groups to promote the well-being and interests of women in Hong Kong," Dr Yeoh said.

The Women's Commission is comprised of 23 members. Joining Mrs Leung as members of the Commission are 17 other non-official members, from a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Five ex-officio members have also been appointed to the Commission. The appointments will take effect from 15 January 2001.

The Women's Commission is a high-level central body tasked with identifying women's needs and specifically, addressing all matters of concern to women. The Commission will play a pivotal role by developing a long-term vision and improved strategy for the development and advancement of women. The Commission will also advise the Government on policies and initiatives of concern to women.
