Appointments to Human Organ Transplant Board

The Government today (February 13) announced appointments to the Human Organ Transplant Board. Serving substantive members Dr John Chan Kwok-cheung and Ms Chan Ka-wai and serving panel members Ms Leung Siu-kum and Mrs Lianne Lam are re-appointed. In addition, Dr Gene Tsoi Wai-wang, who has served as a panel member in the past three years, is appointed as a new substantive member. Dr Thomas Yau Chung-cheung is appointed as a new panel member.

All appointments will take effect from February 15, 2015, for a term of three years.

The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, welcomed the new members. He also expressed gratitude to the outgoing substantive member, Professor Anthony Chan Tak-cheung, for his invaluable contributions and unfailing support to the Board in the past six years.

Established under section 3 of the Human Organ Transplant Ordinance, the Board is tasked to consider applications made for the Board's prior written approval to carry out restricted organ removal and/or restricted organ transplant, to receive prescribed information about transplant operations and certificates accompanying imported organs and to perform any other functions that the Board is required or permitted to perform under the Ordinance.

Under section 3A of the Ordinance, the Board consists of nine substantive members and 14 panel members from the medical, social work, legal and non-medical sectors.
