SFH on dengue fever (with photos)

< Back

Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after inspecting mosquito prevention and control measures in Sha Tin today (April 14):

Reporter: (On dengue fever.)

Secretary for Food and Health: In the past three years from 2011 to 2013, there was no report of local dengue fever cases. However, there were a total of three local dengue fever cases, together with over a hundred imported cases, last year. The situation in neighbouring areas, e.g. Singapore, Guangdong, Taiwan, is a matter of particular concern. The outbreaks of dengue fever in these places last year were severe. That's why there are reasons to believe that if we do not mount a very forceful anti-mosquito campaign this year, a serious outbreak of dengue fever in Hong Kong can be predicted.

Reporter: (On anti-mosquito efforts.)

Secretary for Food and Health: There are two particular aspects that we would advise the general public to pay attention to. Firstly, they should pay attention to wherever places that water can accumulate and clear stagnant water. Secondly, take anti-mosquito measures during outdoor activities.
