The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, today (July 22) expressed deep concern about an incident in Tuen Mun Hospital in which the reference ranges of an Alkaline Phosphatase analyser were wrongly set, affecting some 4 000 patients.

Dr Ko expressed his deep regret at the incident and said that all hospital staff should raise their awareness of using this kind of equipment. He has asked the Hospital Authority (HA) to conduct promptly a thorough investigation of the incident and properly follow up the health condition of the affected patients.

"It is of utmost importance that installation of all medical equipment and facilities should be properly monitored for the safety of patients.

"We apologise to the patients concerned and there is also a need for the HA to review relevant procedures and guidelines in order to avoid the recurrence of similar incidents," he said.
