SFH on lead in drinking water

< Back

Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after attending a public function today (December 4):

Reporter: (On whether the Government would consider adjusting the acceptable lead level in blood.)

Secretary for Food and Health: The professional opinion available to the Government is that there is no absolute safety level of lead. However, the public health measures adopted by the Government are mainly based on a risk stratified approach. I think international experts also agree that the risk of lead content in drinking water mainly pertains to children in the developmental stage. According to the internationally recognised finding, we have designed our public health measures based on a risk stratified approach, that is, to pay our attention mainly to the groups of persons who are easily affected by the presence of lead.

(Please also refer to the Chinese portion of the transcript.)
