SFH on Medical Council reform

Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after attending a radio programme today (July 2):

Reporter: There's a lot of people opposing the recruitment of overseas doctors. Can you tell me ...

Secretary for Food and Health: Let me clarify that through the meetings with some of the stakeholders, especially the frontline doctors, I can see their concern on whether their training, employment or development opportunities would be affected by the doctors who are employed under the Limited Registration Scheme. I can assure them that this will not be the case, because the Hospital Authority (HA) will only recruit limited registration doctors whenever there is a shortage of manpower in a particular specialty that is so serious to make the specialty concerned to ask the HA to go ahead with such a recruitment. The HA will also treat these limited registration doctors separately from our local doctors in terms of employment, development and training. So the opportunity for local doctors would in no way be obstructed by the doctors employed under the Limited Registration Scheme.
